Turkmenistan Airport Opening Ceremony was an hour long projection mapping show, part of an intense 5 hour festivity celebrating the opening of one of the world’s largest airports, the Asghabat Airport in Turkmenistan, constructed by Polimeks in 2016.
The whole center area of the stadium turned into a giant screen for the mapping show, laying out a canvas of 7500 m2. Entire 104x70m2 area was mapped in 2x2 grids, using 40 projectors, and Nohlab designed tailor-made content for opening and closing films, as well as background animations for dance performances covering the whole area. During the event, an additional LED screen showed additional content. Nearly 735GB of content was managed across 16 servers, under surveillance of Nohlab content design team.
Nohlab designed and directed all the creative content related to projection mapping. Many international VIP guests attended the show at the 20,000 people capacity Asghabat Stadium on September 17th.
Engaging other boutique studios in the process, Nohlab took full responsibility of concept design, script writing, animation creation, production and management, as well as sound and music design for the whole hour. Full content was finished in record-breaking 2 months, including the mapping integration for 5K resolution, and turned into an immersive experience with help of contemporary storytelling methods.
Mapping content design accounted for a 20 people team fully directed by Nohlab, who worked for 6 months to shape the content, pinpointing certain themes from Turkmen history and culture. A 15 minute opening film showcased Turkmenistan history, symbols, landscape, cultural motifs, patterns, architecture and the promo for the new airport. The 7 minute closing film pinpointed the future of the country, sports and the future olympics. The remaining 40 minutes of content supported the general choreography, performances with dancers and musicians.
